Heinrich Nollius, Theoria Philosophiae Hermeticae: Rebis

Commentary on Rebis

  1. ambrose_mnemopolous Post author

The rebis, or “double thing,” is an alchemical process relating to the union of opposites. Here, the alchemist is depicted as a philosophical hermaphrodite within the philosophical egg, integrating masculine and feminine energies.

  2. ambrose_mnemopolous Post author

The figure of the rebis is surrounded by astrological signs, clockwise from the left: Venus, Mars, Sun, Mercury, Moon, Jupiter, Saturn.

  3. ambrose_mnemopolous Post author

Note the pairing of opposites: Mars and Venus (male and female), Sun and Moon (day and night), Jupiter and Saturn (joviality and melancholy), and the male and female heads united in one figure.
